Big Love Choral Odes

Scene 11.5 (included in play)

The world is a messed up place,

Injustices piling on injustices at a break-neck pace

Every bright flower withered;

Every beam of light shivered

At the wretchedness of that which it shone.

Oh the world lay in ruins,

A battlefield of rubble and arms and lost dreams

All yahooin’, a wooin’, a yippin’

All sewed down into a seam,

Hidden behind the fabric of destruction.

Brother kill brother,

Sister kill sister,

The flower rises from the loving soil,

Only to be strangled by the same soil.

Unending cycles of death and destruction,

Unending cycles of injustice and vengeance,

End only to be begun again.

Slaves of free will, we choose to throw back the stone,

The stone only returning to break our own bones,

“You started this! You started this!”

We scream with a hiss,

So the same old stone is passed around,

Burning our bodies with every round.

And so does the chain of backstabbing continue:

A knife in them, then a knife in me,

A knife in the knifer, who becomes the knifee.

Scene 7 (included in play)

Oh, the world is twisted,

The world is blasted!

There’s no place to run,

No place to hide.

Every corner we turn,

There’s Pandora’s urn,

Lurking there, letting us run like little mice in a hole,

Before seizing us in an unescapable death-hold!

Every corner, there’s a wall of impenetrable mortar—

Even the corner we’re backed in,

Is a house of bars, a prisoner’s inn!

Scene 9 (included in play)

Eternal joy eternally within our grasp,

Yet why do we never hold it fast?

All we do is just throw it away,

For no good reason or any pay.

Why does the world have to be this way?

Eternal joy is just right there

But our grief and anger holds us back—

Irrational, we revel in our tears,

Thinking it’s a sin to have a joyful knack.

We create our own suffering,

Yet we don’t want to stop—

The higher the pain stacking,

The more our joy becomes throbbing.

Oh humanity!—Oh man!

Why can’t thou just recant?

We can end our suffering here and now and forever!

But you just can’t,

Can’t help but stomp on us like ants!

Why does the world have to be this way?

Eternal joy eternally an inch away…

Scene 2 (not included)

Salvation at last!

Salvation at last!

An angel has saved us at last!

Let’s rejoice!

Let’s rejoice!

For God has heard our voice!

Our paltry, paltry voices!

Which shows there’s even justice

For our insignificant bodices!

Oh sweet God, we thank you,

We thank you,

For giving us light

In this dark, dark plight!

Scene 13 (not included)

Bring it on men! Bring it on men!

Our sweet flesh shall be paired with sweet death!

For eternal joy you rejected;

You chose instead to play king,

Your thrones by our backs erected!—

Treating us like usable things!

So we shall not choose eternal joy either!

We’ll bring you down with us into a hell of hellish ether!
